Exploring the realities of individuals and practitioners within the cosmetic industry, capturing their experiences and perceptions of themselves. Following the personal and professional lives of plastic surgeons, nurses and patients particularly focusing on how they document their work and life online.
At its core, Elective examines how the cosmetic industry presents itself through social media, adopting a meme-driven visual language that shapes public perception. With each new form of communication comes ethical dilemmas. What should be captured and shared, and how should these images be rendered?
Expanding its lens beyond the cosmetic industry, the film interrogates a larger point in how we all document ourselves and how natural or constructed that process truly is. Reflecting on the moral implications of filmmaking itself, Elective questions whether the stylisation inherent to film is ethically distinct from the curated reality of TikTok.
